We have been working on comprehension strategies with different stories. This week, we practiced visualization. We read the story “A Bad Case of Stripes” written by David Shannon about a girl named Camilla Cream. Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don’t like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she’s so worried that she’s about to break out in…a bad case of stripes!
First, we listened to the story without looking at any of the pictures, only allowing ourselves to visualize, or see a movie in our minds. Then, we drew sketches at different points in the story of what we thought Camilla looked like as she makes her changes. Finally, we got to listen to the story a second time and see if our sketches matched the pictures from the story.
Here’s what we came up with!
